Openings ~ 22

The writing is on the wall.

No. Not this time… I went back.  I hobbled along the cobbles

to the Grand old Duke of York

The writing is on the ceiling…

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan’s poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.

The lines are from ‘An Irish Airman Foresees His Death’ ~ by William Butler Yeats.

The other quote is by Oscar Wilde

And Flower of Scotland the Scottish Anthem – Elly could sing that one for you, she did learn something when she lived there! 😉

Today I discovered that the owner of The Duke of York was responsible for the ‘wall garden’, He did approach the owners of the other premises off the entry, to encourage them to join in the venture, but they declined.  He went ahead and tidied his own area and has paid someone to look after the baskets and basins.  I saw evidence of this work on my latest visit.

    Tilly – To get it all in the shot, I would have needed to lie on the ground – I was not the weather for that!

    WWW – It is a partly covered alleyway brought to life by the murals on the walls and the poetry on the ceiling.

    I would have to avoid the cobblestones like the plague. I am doing good to stay upright on a smooth floor now.

    Spain has many of these wall gardens and I would hate to be the one who has to water them, but they are lovely and brighten the blank wall beautifully.

    Darlene – I have to watch where I put my feet at all times. The effects of the fall last September are still there to remind me! 🙁

    theoldfossil – Welcome to my blog. So often we walk about without really noticing our surroundings. Sometimes we go from A to B without even knowing the names of the streets we pass through. My camera is helping me to see things more clearly!

    Yes that is a nice piece by Yeats, but there’s something about that Oscar Wilde quote that reaches me where I live. I’m glad you included it.
