Stealing an idea from Coffee helps I have decided to blog the alphabet over at least 26 weeks.
Not sure whether I will take the letters in order, or randomly pick a letter as the mood takes me. It might be a post about the ‘one’ word, or a list of words all beginning with the same letter. Today I will ‘Start at the very beginning’ as Julie Andrews sang, although there will be no singing from moi, or you would sue me for ear damage.
A ~ Apples
Apples. I am picky about the variety of apple I like. Not to hard to bite into, and have plenty of flavour. Amongst my favourites are:
- Discovery, but alas they have a short season.
- Cox’s Orange Pippin
- Pink lady
- Bramley for baking, stewing, crumbles and tarts.
I have noticed over the years that my body seems to hit a low patch late in the afternoon. I usually boiled the kettle for a quick coffee to pep me up. Then one day I eat an apple while the kettle was boiling – Bingo! The apple gave me the lift in energy levels and actually sorted the thirst question at the same time, so it was one cup of coffee less for me from that day on.
Bramley apples make a quick dessert for me. I peel the top half of the apple and remove the core centre. Leaving the lower half of the skin holds the apple in one piece. I love to pack the centre with sweet mince meat for added flavour.
Stewed apple adds moisture to a sandwich for me (since I cannot eat dairy products) and helps keep the filling in place.
If I am doing my version of a ‘Fry’ all cooked on the grill bar the egg… I will cut a Bramley apple in thick rings leaving the skin on and removing the core and grill along with the bacon, tomato, sausage and pudding. Mind you a ‘Fry’ is an occasional treat these days, I suppose I should avoid them, but as Mammy used to say….
“A little of what you fancy, does you good!”
Hmmm! Right now I fancy….
Oh forget it!
Best saved it for my dreams these days!!!! 😉
