The fountain is situated near the Leeson Street entrance to St. Stephens Green, Dublin, Ireland. It consists of a group of three bronze figures – representing the Three Fates, who weave and measure the thread of man’s destiny.

The statue was a gift offered by Roman Herzog, President of the Federal Republic of Germany at the time.

The engraving on the plaque is in German, Irish and English:

German: In Dankbarkeit für die Hilfe, die das irische Volk deutschen Kindern nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gewährte

Irish: Le buíochas as an gcabhair a thug muintir na hÉireann do pháistí Gearmánacha tar éis an Dara Cogadh Domhanda

English: With gratitude for the help given to German children by the Irish people after World War II.

    Yes, Grannymar, the three fates. One can only hope they either overlook you so you go under the radar or are well disposed towards you.

    A lovely reminder you write. And whilst I can’t say it in Irish: Many thanks to all who had it in their hearts to look after German children, the evacuated.

      I was not born until after the war, but I do know my late mother in law took a young German child int her home in Durham, England. I cannot recall how long for, Jack was either away in Burma or in hospital in Lincolnshire at the time.

    I can’t help wonder why the three fates were chosen as the subject for the gift. It seems very odd for the context contained in the plate.

      Ramana, I would say they might be the Norns ( nothing to do with Norn Iron!), numerous female beings who determine the fate or future of a person in Germanic paganism.

      Chuck, so many of these sculptures appeared all over Dublin after I left, I never reallised I left such a hole! 😉 Nice gentle recording, I don’t remember hearing it before.
