The Three Fates ~ Bronze
Sculptor ~ Professor Josef Wackerle
The fountain is situated near the Leeson Street entrance to St. Stephens Green, Dublin, Ireland. It consists of a group of three bronze figures – representing the Three Fates, who weave and measure the thread of man’s destiny.
The statue was a gift offered by Roman Herzog, President of the Federal Republic of Germany at the time.
The engraving on the plaque is in German, Irish and English:
German: In Dankbarkeit für die Hilfe, die das irische Volk deutschen Kindern nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gewährte
Irish: Le buíochas as an gcabhair a thug muintir na hÉireann do pháistí Gearmánacha tar éis an Dara Cogadh Domhanda
English: With gratitude for the help given to German children by the Irish people after World War II.
Yes, Grannymar, the three fates. One can only hope they either overlook you so you go under the radar or are well disposed towards you.
A lovely reminder you write. And whilst I can’t say it in Irish: Many thanks to all who had it in their hearts to look after German children, the evacuated.

I was not born until after the war, but I do know my late mother in law took a young German child int her home in Durham, England. I cannot recall how long for, Jack was either away in Burma or in hospital in Lincolnshire at the time.
What a lovely statue and pond. I would love to visit Dublin someday.
These days I am seeing Dublin with the eyes of a visitor, and loving it!
Nice sculpture and looks like it’s in a nice park-like setting.
St Stephen’s green is a very popular and well used spot right in the heart of Dublin.
Wonderful recognition and beautiful statue in a great setting. Thanks for sharing this jewel. Dianne
I have plenty more to come in the next few weeks, Dianne.
Fantastic fountain . . . I love the shallow bowl.
The water looks very green in that last shot. I don’t remember it being like that.
I can’t help wonder why the three fates were chosen as the subject for the gift. It seems very odd for the context contained in the plate.
Ramana, I would say they might be the Norns ( nothing to do with Norn Iron!), numerous female beings who determine the fate or future of a person in Germanic paganism.
Thank you. I am humbled to learn this totally new information.
The Norms are only one of many versions of the three Fates, Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fates.
Another great piece of Ireland shared – thank you!
Chuck, so many of these sculptures appeared all over Dublin after I left, I never reallised I left such a hole! 😉 Nice gentle recording, I don’t remember hearing it before.
