Down the years several movies left a mark on my memory. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the first film I was taken to see in the Cinema by my Granny. I came home worried that my brothers might go looking for brides in that same fashion!
High Society I remember more for the giggling incident of the black slip* than the movie itself. Oh I did like the fashion, big houses and the singing, but the story made little impact.
Some of the others through the years to remain with me include:
- To Kill a Mocking Bird (1962)
- Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
- 84 Charing Cross Road(1987)
- Shadowlands (1993)
- The King’s Speech: A Courageous Journey(2011)
- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
Over the last couple of weeks, during resting spells with my foot raised I had the opportunity to watch several movies on the Big Screen with surround sound at George & Elly’s.
These movies included:
The Intouchables
Les.Misérables
Scent of a Woman
Quartet
Life of Pi
Made in Dagenham
Life of Pi made a big impact with the scenery, the animals and the story. It had not alone me, but my female companion engrossed for the duration. It was only when Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger, roared and pounced forward that my companion barked ferociously and jumped on my knee. It was not in fear but to protect me and she continued to bark at the screen until things quietened down once more, then she jumped back to her seat to watch the next part.
Buffy watching Life of Pi.
* The Black slip is a story for another day!
The topic What is your favorite movie? was given to us for today by Shackman. He has stepped back into the shadows for the moment, but we hope that in due course he will return to our weekly LBC party. The names of all the other members are to be found in the sidebar. I have popcorn, so are you coming on the rounds with me?
Life of Pi was a good movie
Yes it was!
One of my top favorites is Dr. Zhivago, but Life of Pi has to be in the top five. I also loved The King’s Speech and the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Scent of a Woman, The Big Fish and some others I can’t remember at the moment.
I forgot about that one for the moment. For once I preferred the film to the book – all those long Russian names had me confused. I have not seen the Big Fish.
Here’s another vote for the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I also love The Last of the Mohicans and when I need cheering up I watch the Full Monte and/or The Wedding Singer.
I just realised I left out Gosford Park and Calendar Girls.
I couldn’t pick one . . . but have enjoyed lots of those on your list.
Love that your companion kept you company and fought off perceived predators during The Life of Pi.
Nancy, I have never seen her so engrossed for such a long period before.
I have so many favourite movies I couldn’t list them all here. And I’ve just added Blue Jasmine, which we managed to see a few weeks back in Portland Oregon. One of the best ever Woody Allen movies, with a stunning performance from Cate Blanchett.
Very impressed by your conscientious canine bodyguard!
Nick, Buffy was really watchful of me since my fall on 10th. I am sure she is missing me since I left this morning.
A worthy list and one from which it will be difficult to chose a favourite one.
I have quite a few more to keep me quiet and entertained for several weeks.
The first movie I ever saw in a theater was “The Sound of Music”. It remains one of my favorite today. I also remember watching “To Kill a Mockingbird” as a girl, and I still love that movie too. I see that one of my favorites, “The King’s Speech” also made your favorite list. Great minds think alike. 🙂
