Last week I went to see the Vampire nurse.
My letter said ‘Fasting bloods’ and no mention of any other test. 😉
I brought my arm! 😆
“Did you bring…..?” she began to ask.
“I didn’t. The letter never mentioned bring a sample, I checked.”
“Could you manage one for me now ?” She asks producing a syringe.
“Sorry” I said “You haven’t a hope. It will be at least lunchtime before I can manage a drop!”
“Well, take this home and put the filled syringe in the bag when you are finished, seal it, and return it to the clinic!”
I know you don’t believe me
On previous occasions we had little bottles for this purpose
The old style was easier to fill, this time I used a foil cupcake dish and drew the liquid into the syringe, replaced the cap, put it in the bag with my details and returned it to the clinic.
Have you come across these syringes before?
I have one of the little bottles (given to me some time ago) which I’m due to use for a check-up in a few weeks’ time. I’ll see if they give me a different type to use in future.
Nick, I usually have one of those bottles (see the photo) in reserve, in case of emergency. I know our health centre is very up to date with ideas, but this one suprised me.
Nuts! wonder if it is different for males. I was given a small bottle! In any case, here, I have the luxury of getting the sample collector to come home at my convenience to take samples.
Ramana, I imagine they are the same for everyone. Maybe Nick will let us know after his next visit.
Between this and fecal occult blood tests, there is no dignity left anymore when visiting the doctor.
We normally do both tests at home. The fecal sample testers come by post with instructions how to carry out the test, then we post off the samples to the lab. What a job… testing shit all day!!!
Nope, never seen one. The urologists I’ve seen have always given me a small plastic cup to fill up.
Normally, my letter asks me to bring a sample, The most preferred is the first of the day, they say it reveals more info. I have the bladder of a camel, so it takes a loonnnng time for liquid to pass through my body.
OMG! Have to laugh. Never saw one of those before. For home I guess that is a good way to store it to bring back to the lab. For sure the catch-cup leaves a lot to be desired. What were they thinking when they designed them for women. There is always new things, some great and some not so great. Thanks for sharing.
I laughed too. You need a dish of some sort to collect the liquid before drawing it into the syringe. I never came across anything like it before. I give the idea six months!
I wonder how the sample stays hygienic in this methodology, the container for extraction could be contaminated, right?
Never saw these, it makes no sense.

They were my thoughts exzctly. Why add more bugs into the mix!
I’ve never been able to pee on demand either. I blame my parents.
I am like my mother, alas my sister arrived on the wrong day for bladders!
When we were in Paris it was difficult to find a place to pee–excuse the bluntness. I went in a side door to a GYN OB unit that I happened to be passing. I used the bathroom but didn’t leave a urine specimen. 🙂
BHB, needs must! 😉 😆
nope not seen that gadget here, yet…although I haven’t had to fill one lately 🙂 I’m more into tubes of blood and the young woman at my local labtest place knows I have “difficult veins” and then afterwards far too much blood!
A hot water bottle held against the inner arm, sometimes helps to enlarge the veins and make the job of the vampire nurse easier, Cathy!
Now that really is “taking the piss” ! … 🙂
John, can you see me laugh?
