Coconut oil – the new wonder substance

“The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. It also provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve dental quality and bone strength.”

Sounds wonderful. But, does it mean I’d have…

  • Silky soft curls.
  • Skin like a baby.
  • Not a care in the world.
  • Cholesterol level of below 4 point whatever the Docs are all shouting about.
  • A figure like a pubescent teenager.
  • A super duper immune system.
  • I’d be able to gorge on cream, milk and butter? (even typing that sentence makes my tummy heave!)
  • Gold star metabolism.
  • Heart problems & high blood pressure would return to normal in a flash!
  • I would never suffer from kidney problems, , diabetes, HIV, and cancer.
  • Mind you it claims only to help improve dental quality and bone strength. *

“The fatty acids and breakdown products in coconut oil can kill harmful pathogens, potentially helping to prevent infections.” **

What? It has not discovered a cure for the common cold or annual flu virus yet?

Have you noticed any Doctor prescribing it for patients? If it was that good, we would all be super healthy and in no need of doctors ❗

Think I will give it a miss so!

A glass of wine with friends and a good old giggle are the only cure I need in life, they dull the aches and pains, warm the cockles of my heart and turn the wrinkles laughter lines upwards ↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑

Having lived in Kerala and also having close friendships with many from the land of the coconut, I can vouch for all the statements that you have listed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala

But, your choice of “A glass of wine with friends and a good old giggle are the only cure I need in life, they dull the aches and pains, warm the cockles of my heart and turn the wrinkles laughter lines upwards ↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑ ” will work in Kerala too.

If I had a pound for every wonder substance I’ve been told about, I’d be very wealthy. I think a well-balanced daily diet with all the essential nutrients is probably as effective as any such miracle elixir.

I agree with you, Nick. There is no such thing as a wonder food/pill that cures all ills. If there was, we would have no need for Doctors or nurses. As mammy used to say: Everything in moderation and a little of what you fancy does you good!

I would love them to find a cure – or a shortened version if you get – for a cold! Dam things can drag on with drippy nostrils for what seems like weeks…or you’ve over it and you phone someone who says “oh you’ve got a head cold”

I can’t praise it enough for what it does for my hair but everything else reminds me of snake oil sales.

At least this year it (the heat) is very affordable and the sweater drawer is filling up with a few new creations.

My Foodnerd friends are ordering it. I’m still cautious so at my age I’m sticking to olive oil.

I decided to leave the coconut oil on the shelf and stick to my good old mixed diet of home cooked meals with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

That Hawaiian oil was very popular here too, but nowadays people are moving over to fake tanning in the summer months.

Great post, Marie! I always was sceptical with that huge amount of advertising for coconut oil in the past – let’s say maybe 10 years. It fully came to my mind when they began to use it as fuel. I hate this trend, to take plants for fuel. And cutting the woods for that and destroying the land. One area after the other. I realised then that nearly every food product contains coconut oil, not to talk about cosmetics. In every cream or lotion or shampoo you find that coconutty smell. It has not been like that before! I do not want to bad-mouth it, it’s a good oil, but it was locally then and now its globally used just for making money and therefore – I’d say – it’s waisted. Not more appreciated in it’s very deep meaning… Even organic products contain lots of it. And they claim out in great words how caring they treat the farmers and so on. – I just can try to avoid buying things where it is in. Or better to shop just more conciously. Thanks for your thoughts, Marie.

I am not a fan of claims of cure all fads. As I have said somewhere if the coconut oil was that good, we would have no need for doctors or hospitals! Watch your email inbox!
