In the last couple of weeks I had a letter from my bank. It was not to discuss my tuppence of assets in their grip.
No it was to insure I had easy access to reduce and spend it.
A spanking brand new piece of plastic was attached to the letter, a month before the old one expired. At least this new plastic did not necessitate a page of questions about my financial health and a tour of the land!!!!
This spanking brand new piece of plastic brought me up to date with the world of swiping. Making small purchases up to the value of £30, I can swipe my card on the card reader without the effort of inserting my pin number.
Just like the new shoes or sandals bought for me as a child, I loved to walk out of the shop wearing them. I was anxious to try this spanking brand new piece of plastic.
On my next visit to the local branch of Asda, I discovered they do not have the facility for the use of Swipe cards. I discovered it was the same story in other Supermarkets – Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
Lidl does have the facility, so when I have run out of almonds for baking, or feel like a crusty roll for my lunch, I know where I’ll be swiping!
Now on the mention of food and lunch, I discovered this video recently and thought it was perfect for anyone wanting to lose those winter pounds:
It’s also the “I’m having a biscuit so I brought you one too” and the “are you SURE you don’t want another piece of chocolate, there’s only three bits left”. The Husband has much to answer for….
Memories, memories. I don’t have anyone to blame so once the seal is broken on the chocolate or biscuits, I am done for. 🙁
Great! Let’s use it together in London!
P.S. Thanks for making me feel guilty about my doughnut this morning!
Al, you never know what mischief we will get up to in London… with my swipe card! 😉
That’s an interesting storage facility for all those tempting items. I have to say I don’t do much impulse eating, I have a lot of will power where eating is concerned. I couldn’t do without my occasional chocolate or caramel traybake though.
Not sure what is happening here, this is the third time to try and answer your comment, Nick. Each time I hit ‘Post Comment the whole thing disappears.
I thought the video was very clever at showing how all the extra titbits and fast food land and sit round our middles. I have to admit a sweet tooth weakness, once a bar of chocolate is open, I have a sudden urge to eat all of it.
I recently received one of those ‘tap and go’ cards and visited three local stores with it. 1st store ‘tap’ easy … 2nd store ‘tap’ great … 3rd store ‘tap’ .. Nothing ! and the girl behind the counter looked at me as if I was mad and said “You have to put it in the machine ,sir, and enter your PIN”.. How dumb can you be ? .. 🙁
At least I was told “We are not geared up for swiping yet!” The girl at the till in Lidl was so pleased to say we could use it, knowing they were the only shop in town with the facility.
Happy swiping wherever it is allowed!
It is for the smaller purchases up to £30 pounds, but I am sure it shortens the time standing in line at checkouts.
I’m not sure whether we here in the U.S. are behind you or ahead of you. I recently received a card with a chip in it. It’s supposed to increase the security of the card. But it doesn’t offer any protection from the greatest danger of all — me!
😆 Tom, alas none of the cards cater for the ‘BIGGEST’ danger:- The user! Mind you it is preferable to carrying a load of coins around in pockets or purses, and our £pound coins are heavy.
I heard on CBC yesterday that cards are being phased out now it will be all smartphones and no cards. So we can spend our money without thinking.

That is the problem, Cards make it easy to spend money and when we do not see the actual money we are spending… we really need to keep and check records. I am not sure that I would like phone payments for everyday use.
A few months ago, I didn’t realise my credit card worked like – I was using it to pay for some clothing and before I new it – the machine was racing ahead – I said to the asst, but I haven’t run it through the side, and then she took it and said “oh it’s a Pay and Go” card!
This is a handy little bonus added to all the regular features that come with the card.
I suppose the bright side of the situation is you won’t be overspending anywhere if you can’t even use the card! It’s so hard to keep up with all the card/bank changes! I enjoyed the video, Marie!
Debra, it works just as it did before in card readers and ATMs, this is an added bonus when making small transactions.
